Memorial Day Plans? Youbetcha

Memorial day has typically been a camping holiday for me. Up in MT things are finally starting to warm up, the snow is gone from everywhere but the peaks, the grizzlies are starting to tour Yellowstone, and everything just screams for campfires and hiking. Apparently that is not the case here in UT. While most resorts appear to be closing this upcoming weekend (or already are closed), Snowbird is holding out until this, the first "summer" holiday. I have never skied in May before, and am not expecting anything spectacular, but the idea of skiing on Memorial day, or even just close is both awesome and mind-boggling. Utahns apparently push the boundaries of what Spring skiing can be.

Consider this: in the last week Snowbird has gotten around 2 feet of snow. In case you forgot, it's April. Not April 1, but we're almost 2 weeks in and it's still dumping here. Spring means it's not going to stick around and stay fluffy for long, but honestly, IT'S DUMPING IN FREAKING APRIL! I'm more used to it dumping after the resorts close because Ullr is a spiteful creature and knows I don't yet have a backcountry set-up.

So, and it makes me giddy to write this, I guess I'll be taking advantage of my break between end of classes and joining a thesis lab to ski my little heart out in this spring wonderland. You know, I think I might be able to embrace this season after all. . .
