Skication Day 3: Big Sky

I guess the perfect spring weather couldn't last forever. Today was gusty and cold, though the latter could have been helped by my opting for my thicker jacket. The clouds kept rolling through, making lighting highly variable. Other than that Big Sky had awesome snow and short lift lines (even the Tram) so it was overall a good day.

It was another late on-snow day since all three of us are pretty much running on fumes at this point, but since it was cold and windy and some lifts had been on wind hold it was all for the best I guess. It was weird being back at my old stomping grounds with two Montana-virgins and I ended up being the decision maker for runs. We covered at lot of horizontal at the resort (which if you won't know stretches across two mountains) and a fair amount of vert too. Most of our runs were groomers and it was surprisingly not icy, though it was crusty in places. The cherry run of the day was definitely our one Lone Peak lap; we hit up one of my fave runs (Marx) and found some soft snow that really allowed us to get into a nice rhythm.

There's a great feeling in returning to a mountain you know so well after trying to learn the secrets of a new resort. It's a kind of freedom; without the fear of getting marooned on an unknown cliff it's possible to get that much more into the day and relish each turn for the pure joy of gliding and carving. Tomorrow at Moonlight should be even better since that is truly my heart's home. I know that sounds sadly poetic in an emo/hipster/I'm-so-cool-look-at-me way, but it's the truth. I know that mountain better than the back of my hand, and it's fun to go home.

Tonight we're partying Montana-style, hitting up R Bar (rebuilt since the original exploded a few years back) and then making our way wherever. Hopefully we'll keep it in check (a) since we're skiing AGAIN tomorrow (life sucks sometimes, y'know) and (b) I don't need to give my parents more blackmail material.

Go out and party tonight and it'll be like you're partying with us.
